Help A Rare Species When You Get Your Geek On…

This week, we’re supporting the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) on a very special project – a conservation breeding programme for protecting one of the UK’s rarest species.

10% of all profit from sales of our Story Of Seasons collection this week (from 24 May to 31 May) will go to support the RZSS’s work to save the Critically Endangered pine hoverfly. 

The RZSS has led the pine hoverfly conservation breeding programme since it was established in 2016. This programme, based at the wildlife conservation charity’s Highland Wildlife Park, now holds the majority of the known UK population of pine hoverflies and is currently the species’ best hope of survival.

Pine hoverflies are Critically Endangered and one of the UK’s rarest species. Their main threat in the UK is the loss of the ancient pine forests they call home. Restricted to just one site in the wild, a small forest patch in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, pine hoverflies are so rare that no one has seen an adult fly in the wild for over 8 years. Pine hoverflies have a fascinating lifecycle and require specific environmental conditions for each stage of their lives, including a particularly glamorous moist rot hole found in decaying tree stumps to sustain the larvae! Keepers at Highland Wildlife Park care for these important invertebrates in a new facility part-funded by Marvelous Europe’s new game STORY OF SEASONS: Pioneers of Olive Town.

We were hugely inspired by this story and so, over the next week, we will be donating 10% of all sales of our Story Of Seasons collection this week direct to the RZSS’s awesome work.
